Preparatory Level 6 Sign Language Interpreting (Part 1)
This course is to prepare candidates who already have the equivalent of level 6 NVQ in BSL in their second language, to develop their interpreting skills and compile a portfolio for the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting.
Candidates will be given a thorough grounding in interpreting studies which relates directly to the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria of the Signature accredited Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting. Topics that will be covered during the preparatory section will include: preparing for professional interpreting assignments; modes of interpreting such as consecutive and simultaneous; use of appropriate technology; self-evaluation and professional development plans; using formal/informal and colloquial registers; use of coping strategies; considering pragmatics; professional issues of interpreting such as confidentiality and ethics; working as part of an interpreting team; preparation and production of sight translations; voice coaching, study of Interpreting theories.
At the end of the preparatory course candidates will be interviewed prior to being accepted to the NVQ Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting Course and becoming a Trainee Sign Language Interpreter.
The Signature Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting is designed to enable learners to work with confidence in various situations, understand and use complex language and express themselves fluently when using two-way interpreting. The qualification uses the National Occupational Standards in Interpreting (CILT 2006), which define competent performance in interpreting. Candidates will provide proof of their interpreting competence by compiling a portfolio of evidence, which is internally assessed and verified by the centre. On completion successful candidates will be eligible to register as a Qualified British Sign Language/English Interpreter with NRCPD, SASLI, ASLI and VLP.
Entry requirements: a minimum of the CACDP/Signature Level 4 or NVQ 6 in BSL and other equivalent qualifications may be accepted. Prospective candidates will have their signing skills assessed at interview prior to being accepted on the course. Must have a minimum of 6 months volunteering CSW or paid work experience working with Deaf people.
